By working with Richard Balling, he dwindled in popularity by betraying the Progressives morals about managing public land fairly and appropriately and by firing Gifford Ponchos, head of the US Forest Services. Although Tuft's concerns are highlighted, his success need not be overshadowed by the commotion he caused. Taft conserved more public land and and consorted more antitrust cases than Roosevelt even did.He continuously backed the Children's Bureau , the Sixteenth and Seventeenth amendments calling for income taxes and the direct el ection of senators and last, but not least, he agreed with the Mann Alkies Act of 1910 which gave the Interstate Commerce Commission the power to adapt telephone and telegraph rates. William Howard Tuft's delegation demonstrated many concerns, but also brought about focal points on the undying Progressive Reforms. The Progressive Era left an invaluable legacy for the United States of America for years and years to come.The lasting reforms through Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft and Woodrow Willow's successes which brought about the many changes of child labor laws, women's suffrage, trust busting, protecting working conditions, public health laws, strengthening the representative government, income taxes and the preservation of communal lands set a green light for the innovation and improvement of our nation's current laws. The Progressives methods of economic regulation led to improving the recession during the Great Depression. To this very day, the amendments made by the Progressives are still intact.Through Progressivism, the United States evolved into a nation open for improvements for the betterment of society and a place where no one settled for less for less than what they believed they deserved. The first of these issues is the declining price of Global Communications stock, presumably due to the increased amount of competition in the field. Such a decline in overall profitability is the most pressing problem facing the company; however, it is also the broadest in that several more specific problems contribute to this overall issue. One of the contributing factors is the need for new services and innovations in research and development. Such innovations require capital and financial resources, which relates to the problem of declining confidence among stockholders, who are wondering if they industry can recover from the competitive situation in which it currently finds itself. The problem of stockholder confidence therefore contributes to the lack of funds available for innovations and research, meaning that the company must find a way to increase profits without depending on stockholder confidence. The initial attempt to address these financial issues, outsourcing many jobs to Ireland and India, has also created more problems for Global. The employee union feels betrayed and is threatening legal action regarding the layoffs. Additionally, the public relations issue regarding this outsourcing is an important one for Global to address in order to prevent a public backlash in response to the outsourcing and union-relations issues. Despite the many problems facing Global, several opportunities exist for the company to grow and become as profitable as it was during the previous era. There is an immediate opportunity available to lower the costs of labor facing the company by utilizing the outsourcing plan and the labor available overseas. Such an action will free up company resources to be spent on research and development of new services and products, which will rebuild the base of Global Communications customers through the many services offered. Additionally, such an expansion in services will increase the market share for Global among small business owners, one of the company’s overall goals, and offer the opportunity to reinforce a public perception of Global as one of the leaders in telecommunications technology. Besides these profitability issues, there is an opportunity to establish new norms regarding the union and employee relations within Global. Perhaps an established plan of communication or route of information dissemination can be created, and career counseling and training could be offered for the employees who were laid off, helping re-establish the public and in-company perception of Global. The most obvious opportunity for Global is also the broadest; the chance for the company to grow and return to previous years’ profitability is one that exists in the current atmosphere of change. Global leaders must take advantage of the many opportunities to change the company, its relationships, and its products and technology as soon as possible. Stakeholder Perspectives/Ethical Dilemmas There are several groups of stakeholders in this discussion; from the individual stockholders to the union members to the highest executives, the different groups all have different priorities in the Global restructuring. Stockholders have at heart the long-term profitability and growth of the company, similar to the priority of global executives to see the company grow and profit overall. Other groups, notably the employees and union representatives, have as their first priority the job security and salary of employees as their first priority; the relationship with management and the pending layoffs are more important to these groups than profitability or growth. The struggle between these groups to have their own needs prioritized represents an ethical dilemma for Global; the negative affects of the layoffs must be weighed against the overall survival of the company; the detriment to individual employees and public perception must be weighed against continuing Global’s position as an innovator and industry leader. Global Communications and the employees’ union can both benefit from the increased profitability which will happen as a result of the outsourcing and shift in services offered; in the long-term, both groups can work to create benefit and profit for individual stockholders as well as company executives and management. This long-term benefit will additionally give Global employees greater job security. Also children nowadays practice  many activities on the Internet; the most popular ones are schoolwork, social networking and  online gaming. Children’s ability to access the Internet has grown rapidly. It has made our  life much easier and it has become an essential part of modern life. Even though the benefits of the Internet are countless, it may be considered as an extremely  dangerous environment for children because some of the Internet contents can’t be controlled  and uncensored. Also children are not fully aware of how horrible and devastating the  consequences could be. However, there is no universally accepted view of what is more important whether the  education of children or protection, which is also another challenge! Also the differences in  people’s cultures and geographical location in legal and social norms reflect the lack of  common agreement. In this report, we will discuss three main issues that raise the concerns about children on the internet: The possibility that children could obverse inappropriate content in the Internet. Contact with people who seek to abuse children. Privacy risk from game sites that ask children for extensive personal and family  Information for marketing purposes. Background and The Importance of The Internet: The evolution of the Internet in the last 3 decades has been hugely improved and nowadays  we rely on it in most of our daily needs. It’s both informative and entertaining medium. Some children use it to expand their horizon  and increase their knowledge and other use it just for fun. Also these activities doesn’t require the traditional desktop computer anymore, the platforms  has increased to handheld devices such as smart phones and tablets. The Internet doesn’t just improve children mental skills but also improves their imagination  and develops their interaction skills. The ways of using the Internet and the reasons differ from child to child according to the  child age and interests. Explanation of the issues: Despite the many benefits of using the Internet and its associated services among children  there are also risks, which they must be made aware of 1. In this report we will explain some  issues such as: The possibility that children could obverse inappropriate content in the  Internet (as in Networked Communications- Children Inappropriate Content section in the  course), contact with people who seek to abuse children and privacy risk from game sites that  ask children for extensive personal and family information for marketing purposes. The possibility that children could obverse inappropriate content in the  Internet: The term inappropriate content may vary across generations and across countries and  cultures. On the other hand, there is content that is considered in all cultures as inappropriate  for children, such as the depiction of graphic violence or sexual abuse, and encouragement to  harm ones self or others. Moreover, some content can be considered as illegal, such as  violent or sexual acts against children, and the promotion of racism and xenophobia. The  different types of inappropriate content and risks that children can encounter online is  classified based on the role of the child (as recipient, participant or as actor) and the motives  of the provider (commercial, aggressive, sexual and values-related). Children inevitably  encounter content such as pornography as it is widely available on the Internet. Child  pornography in particular has important implications and considered as one of the most  serious crimes on the Internet. Sexual content, like pornographic or sexual depictions, might  cause harm to children or lead them to personal contact with potentially dangerous strangers. Contacting with people who seek to abuse children: Speaking of contacting with people who seek to abuse children, ‘British investigators flew to  America to rescue a six-year-old-girl who was being repeatedly raped on video by her father  for the gratification of members of a highly secretive internet paedophile ring.’ And many  other stories like this one appear on a regular basis. Child abuse takes new forms, leaving  social workers and parents confused about new threats that may arrive with new  technologies. Contact offences can be committed by adults where an adult commits or seeks  to commit a sexual offence on a child. Historically most child sex abuse was by a family  member or from people in his social circles. On the Internet adults who may become  involved with sexually abusing children can locate them and make the initial contact using a  different interactive, communications technologies. Usually the adult and the child will  initially meet in an Internet chat room. Committed paedophiles are known to frequent chat  rooms that are popular with children such as chat rooms related to music, fashion, or sport. The paedophile may be very skillful in communicating with children, he shows himself to the  child as a nice guy or tries to become their special friend and persuades the child to leave the  public space and go off into a private chat room. The paedophile and the child can then  arrange to continue to communicate with each other in different ways. He will ensure that the  child does not keep any record of their conversations, as sooner or later he will seek to  sexualize the contact and conversations as part of the grooming process. The effect on  children of being sexually abused is almost deeply damaging both in the short and longer  runs. A child who knew that images or a record of their abuse were out there on the Internet,  might be worried that the image could reach their classmates, neighbors or other family  members. Alternatively the image could fall into the hands of other people who know them  and who might then use it against them. Children who have be en abused in front of a web  cam similarly could never be absolutely sure that they would not meet someone who might  have witnessed their abuse and recognize them in real life. Privacy risk from game sites that ask children for extensive personal and  family information for marketing purposes: Moreover on the issues of children on the Internet, the privacy risks from game sites that  arise from asking children for extensive personal and family information for marketing  purposes. Many corporations seeking to capitalize on this market create websites that offer  games, quizzes, chat environments, and advice in order to encourage children to provide their  personal information, which can then be used to target the children with advertising, For  example Kraft, which owns Lifesavers, are interested in kids because of their spending  power. Corporations Typically, these children’s sites play into their developmental needs in  order to encourage kids to talk about themselves. Many of these sites, like Tickle.com, use  personality tests to collect information from, and market to, individual girls. These quizzes  ask detailed questions about the child’s personality, preferences, hopes, and aspirations. Since  children have to register with the si te before they can access the quizzes, the marketer is able  to record the child’s responses linked to his or her first and last name, zip/postal code, email  address, gender, marital status, and level of education. This information can also be matched  against the data trail that the child generates as she surfs through the site, selecting articles,  chatting online and playing games. Tickle also uses the information they collect to target girls  with personalized advertisements. Act Utilitarianism Proposed Rule â€Å"Some people post graphic violence or sexual abuse or encouragement to harm ones  self or others† Benefits 1. Sometimes this content may be used to increase the knowledge of the child about the  inappropriate actions and things to avoid. Harms 1. Physiological harms to the children. 2. Children will try to apply what they see of encouragement to harm ones self or  others, which leads to death in some cases. 3. May lead them to personal contact with potentially dangerous strangers to talk about  what they had seen instead of talking with their parents.   Result We can see above that harms overweigh the benefits, so, based on Act Utilitarianism this  rule is morally wrong. Summary and conclusions: To summaries, the Internet today has a very useful and important resources and a lot of  schools depend on it almost completely, but also there is no clear accepted view that will  everyone agree on when it comes to also protection. When I Consider How My Light is Spent Essay -- Literary Analysis, John

John Milton’s Sonnet XIX, known as â€Å"When I Consider How My Light Is Spent† is a poem considering one’s disabling affliction in light of a time-less truth that the Apostle Paul wrote of: all things work to the good who love God and one thereby learns to be content in all things. Milton’s disabling affliction was blindness and by most interpretative accounts he was blind when he wrote Sonnet XIX. First to consider is that the poem used in The Norton Anthology of English Literature is an edited version from The Complete Poetry and Major Prose of Milton, edited by Merritt Y. Hughes. The poem that will be considered here is the 1673 text printed in The Riverside Milton, edited by Roy Flannagan. The decision of Riverside was not to intervene into the text, but to leave as it was written. Hughes’ changes insert punctuation, capitalization and spelling to update it to a modern audience. By modernizing the poem Hughes has effectively changed the meaning to what he as the editor had in mind. Milton wanted good readers, readers that read deeper than surface meanings and by changing the text the art of Milton’s words are compromised for the poem was designed to confuse the reader. Milton as a wordsmith is preparing the reader for a spiritual confusion that leads one to a question. Hughes’ editing reinforces the binary aspects of the poem that sets up one speaker i n the octave and one speaker in the sestet, the problem in the octave then the solution in the sestet, if one likes. If one leaves out the editorial changes, the octave speaker and the sestet speaker become erased... ... is required of all humankind. Time's Arrow by Martin Amis The human being is an analytical creature. From scientists to philosophers to star-crossed teenaged lovers, the human is internally motivated to understand the world around him. That world provides countless puzzles for the human to solve, whether these puzzles lie in the forests of the heart, the laws of mathematics or the annals of history. However, some of the most unfathomable aspects of this world have been entirely created by humans. The Holocaust is one of the most unfathomable events in human history. Countless documentaries, pieces of literature, psychological analyses and films have explored the topic in an attempt to understand exactly how humans could commit such terrible atrocities against one another. Time’s Arrow, by Martin Amis, initially attempts to answer this question by exploring the life of a Nazi doctor. To do this, he separates the narrator’s consciousness from his mind, re-living his life backwards. In doing so, Amis tries to reverse the laws of entropy, to heal by un-creating human destruction. However, as the narrator (the doctor’s consciousness) eventually finds, reversing time’s arrow does not make the Holocaust fathomable. Therefore, in Time’s Arrow, Martin Amis suggests that humans will always manage to increase entropy, despite the reversal of time and the laws of the physical world. The term â€Å"entropy† describes a â€Å"measure of disorder or randomness in an isolated system† (Dictionary.com). According to the Second Law of Thermodynamics, the entropy of an isolated system will always increase over time. Therefore, disorder and randomness are constantly increasing. Amis drew from both this law and the work of the physicist A.S. Eddington in writing T... ... undo the chaos that we had created. Yet in Time’s Arrow, entropy is not just never truly reduced, it is ultimately increased. Thus, Amis argues that entropy’s effect on humanity is an inherently human creation. This is the list of the individuals that are responsible for the most heinous crimes happening around the world. It is the goal of the ICC to find these criminals and bring them to justice. American Involvement in the International Criminal Court, designed to provide enforcement and prosecution for crimes against humanity, is critical to its success in fighting those who are responsible for the world’s worst crimes. The International Criminal Court was first established in 1998 when 120 countries voted to adopt the treaty outlining its structure. This treaty went into effect on July 1, 2002, and 108 countries have ratified it as of 2008. The goal of the ICC is to bring the most serious international war criminals to justice and stop crimes such as genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes (USA for the International Criminal Court). The involvement of the United States in the ICC has changed with each president in office. During the Clinton Administration, President Clinton participated in negotiations with the ICC and signed its statute in 2000. However, he did not ratify the treaty because he believed it to be flawed. Then, in 2002, the Bush Administration announced that it would no longer participate in any ICC activity and would not support the court when it was established (AMICC). Since then, the Obama Administration has changed the United States’ relationship with the ICC f rom that of hostility to positive support.
